Street drawing

I’ve been making movement drawings in my sketchbook whenever I can for some time. Often I like the results on their own, but I rarely post just these sketches; they often inform other drawings, but I like the raw quality of the sketches.

Movement drawing studies

Some sketches drawn around Helsinki capturing the movement of people through space. Pencil and brush pen for the quick sketches. Ink and brush working over one of the drawings. These sketches are ongoing.

Laban dance centre sketches

Drawings made during a live dance performance of new students’ work at the Laban Centre. The drawings attempt to map and express the movements of the dancers though observational drawing. Rather than drawing the body in motion as a representational figurative study I was more interested in the energy and movement of the dancers and somehow mapping this. Part experiment and part technical study. I often develop further drawings from the memory of the movements or directly from the original drawings.

Sketches of people passing through Euston and Waterloo train stations

These are studies made in Euston and Waterloo station. The main concern in these drawings is to capture the movement of people in space and time. There is a figurative aspect to these drawings and also something more like a diagram or mapping of movement. In all these drawings I have tried to keep the line loose and free. Some elements of the scene have been sketched in as a framework.
